Archie, you have stood the Watch for many a year keeping everything shipshape, seaworthy and safe. You’ve done your duty. I relieve you. I now have the Watch, lay below and get your well earned rest. I knew Archie since I was a young man living in Nassau and always enjoyed his true kindness he showed everyone he met. When I joined the U. S. Navy in NOV 1977 I would sometimes share a few cold drinks with him and my stepfather Richard BECKER at the firehouse whenever I was home on leave. Archie was the kind of Sailor I thought a Sailor should be; brave, unselfish, community-oriented, a solid, honest man who always kept his word, looked you straight in the eye when speaking with you and seemed to always be where he was most needed at any given time and always had the right words to say. As a fellow Tin Can Sailor, (USS RUSSELL (DDG 59); AUG 95-AUG 99 at Pearl Harbor, HI), a Shipmate is never forgotten but always remembered for having served in our Navy, served his fellow man, his God and his family. “Fair winds and following seas Archie. May the sea spray be mild, the drinks be cold, the ship’s trim be favorable, and the watch be short. Save a stool for me when again we meet on liberty and I’ll catch you up with a few sea stories to help keep the barnacles off your stern plates!” Tom Valle ETCS(SW) Retired

Said goodbye to Archie today. Will miss him and certainly Nassau won’t ever be the same without him.

I knew Mr. Sherman only indirectly through my parents over my lifetime. My father did repair work on his home after a fire and Archie was on the rescue squad one day in 2005 when my father, suffering from the Emphysema which claimed him that year, needed transport to AMC. He seemed to be a most likable fellow, a genuine “everyman” of good humor and heart, salt of the Earth. Godspeed on your way to better a better place! A fellow veteran and marathoner. My sincerest condolences to his kin.
