For the new twelve year old in town, Mr. and Mrs. Cooper graciously opened the door to the community by inviting our family into church, their home, as well as the Spring Lake circle. Their welcome and ongoing friendship made life in Nassau quite enjoyable for me. I have many fond memories of spending time in Betty Cooper’s company, whether in her home, in church activities, or at the lake. Who could have had more patience with a junior choir than Mrs. Cooper? At the time, I couldn’t understand why she would want to teach us “Balm in Gilead” since we giggled through much of practice time! Today it’s still one of those songs that brings back those memories and I’ve come to appreciate the hymm as she must have. Nassau was and is a friendlier and more solid community thanks to the generous gifts of time and energy of the Coopers. I wish that I could be with you Tuesday but send my love and appreciation. Although I moved from Nassau just before I turned seven, I have fond memories of both Mr. and Mrs. Cooper from when my father was serving at the church in Nassau. One was from several years ago at my father’s retirement party, when Mr. Cooper spoke up to remind everyone in attendance that Grace UMC trained my father! I have very fond memories of Nassau and of the Coopers. Mr. Cooper and family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this time off loss. May the many fond memories shared about Mrs. Cooper bring you comfort. Beth Long-Velasquez
