Obituary of Lawrence L. Cooper

Nassau- Lawrence L. “Coop” Cooper passed away peacefully, at the age of 77, at St. Peter’s Hospital on Monday, May 8, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer. Larry was born in Troy, NY, was raised in Nassau, NY, and was a graduate of the Columbia High School Class of 1964. Coop retired from General Electric/General Dynamics and National Grid. Larry was a 60-year member, Past President, and Past Chief of the Nassau Hose Company #1. Larry adored the fire company and all the lasting friendships and relationships he made through it. Larry spent many years pitching for the former softball team of the Nassau Hose Company #1. In the 25 years he pitched for the softball team many do not recollect the team ever losing. Larry was also a 25-year member of the Nassau Ambulance and one of the first EMTs in the State of New York. Larry was also a lifetime member of the Grace United Methodist Church, in Nassau. Larry coached for the Nassau Little League. Coop was also an avid fan of both the New York Yankees and Giants. Larry was a recipient of the Richard W. Becker Memorial Award. Larry was passionate about the scholarship fund he started, the Nassau Hose Company #1 Student Scholarship Fund. Everyone knew Larry and the late Joe Lundy, as the men who greeted and helped them park at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, something Larry enjoyed for 38 years.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, Ralph M. and Laura (Lomax) Cooper. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Patty J. (Hunter) Cooper. He is also survived by his daughters Michelle Lynn (Richard L. Gengenbach) Cooper, Jennifer A. (Fiancé Steven Morton) Mensing, and his son Matthew L. (Kristin) Cooper. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hunter, Althea, Grace, Logan, Jackson, Noah, Clare, and Ryan. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy (Cooper) Rhodes.

A funeral service will be celebrated at 11:00 am, on Saturday, May 13th, 2023, at Grace United Methodist Church, 42 Church St. Nassau, NY. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service, in Nassau Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment at the Nassau Hose Company #1. Relatives and Friends are invited to visit with Larry’s family, on Friday, May 12, 2023, from 4:00-9:00pm at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, LLC., 11 Elm St. Nassau, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Nassau Hose Company Student Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 42, Nassau, NY 12123.
